Worlds
Colliding
Moving from
the world of fine arts to motherhood proved to be quite a culture shock
for me. I felt so overwhelmed when my first son was born, that my art
career came to a complete halt. I never lost the desire to make things
and although there was no time for art in my life, I managed to find plenty
of time to make baby quilts, felt books, angel Christmas tree ornaments
from pasta, and mounds of cookies—It was my motherhood duty.
I feel as
though I've been called to be an artist and a mother; and although these
two roles feel like worlds colliding, there is nothing contradictory about
them. This work is my attempt to bring the two together. I appropriate
works from artists from whom I draw inspiration in combination with symbols
of domesticity and childhood: a sort of Elmo meets Rembrandt.
